Sun Tunnels in Utah

Sun Tunnels art space near Wendover, Nevada opened in 1976 in the Great Basin Desert in northwestern Utah. The artist, Nancy Holt (1938-2014) created four concrete cylinders that are 18 feet in length and 9 feet in diameter. Sun Tunnels is arranged in an open cross format and aligned to frame the sun on the horizon during the summer and winter solstices. Holes in the tunnels form replicas of celestial galaxies so that sun spots inside the tunnels outline those formations during daylight hours.

In 2010, my sister Judy Wavers and cousin Carolina Carter spent the morning there, installed Webs and photographed them. We left nothing but our footprints and great memories.
