Installation

Installation, the art of creating an environment that transports whoever enters to different space and time, is usually developed by more than one person. The art is the process - planning, manufacturing, building - as much as the product.

String Theory began as a class at Sacramento City College, scheduled for six weeks. It lasted four months, a collaborative project from the design phase through tying the last knot. Professor Chris Daubert did the heavy lifting as he arranged for the project to be housed at Sacramento City College, created the wooden framework and false floor for the hallway, and managed the project, allowing students’ creativity to flourish. Students dyed and threaded the eight miles of string after finishing the design work. The parts were assembled at the college and then transported and installed at the Crocker Museum. This section is a memorial to Chris Daubert. His multi-faceted skills as a teacher, seemingly limitless energy, humor I often missed, and generous heart gifted decades of students.

A group of individuals from the STRING THEORY installation took artistic expression to new heights by repurposing the strings from their original installation to create a new work of art. This venture, dubbed "No Strings Attached," not only showcased the group's creativity but also highlighted the transformative power of art in unexpected places.
After seeking and gaining permission from a generous landowner near Sacramento, the group embarked on their project. Armed with their passion for art and a desire to breathe new life into the once-static strings, the team meticulously refurbished and reimagined the material, infusing it with a fresh sense of purpose and vibrancy.
The resulting creation is nothing short of awe-inspiring. "No Strings Attached" weaves a tapestry of interconnectedness and innovation, utilizing the repurposed strings to form a mesmerizing visual and tactile experience. The installation is a testament to the group's dedication to pushing boundaries and redefining what art can be.
As the sun sets on this latest artistic endeavor, it served as a powerful reminder of the impact of collaboration and creativity.
Interestingly, within days, the work was ravaged by unknown vandals. Did someone misinterpret the rainbow (chosen for their chakra symbolism) colors? I was surprised to arrive on the scene, excited to show a friend our creation, to find everything gone but one lonely bird.
